A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Femi Falana said Benin Republic has demonstrated a dogged stance to not repatriate popular Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, despite demand and pressure from the Nigerian Government.

According to the legal luminary, the Beninoise authorities had stopped a standby helicopter which was allegedly made available by the Nigerian Government from extraditing Igboho on the day of his arrest in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Speaking during an interview session with the BBC Yoruba, Falana disclosed that the Beninoise authorities refused to put the activist on a waiting plane. According to him, the government in Benin told their Nigerian counterpart that obeying the rule of law is sacrosanct to them.

In his words, “The Nigerian government asked the Benin Republic government to repatriate Sunday Igboho. In fact, we heard they had even sent an aircraft to be used to bring him down to Abuja.

“The Benin government made its Nigerian counterpart to understand that this is not a lawless society.”

Recall Igboho who was arrested at an airport in Cotonou has since remained in the custody of the security operatives in Benin Republic.
