Christian Eriksen is now in stable condition and has been rushed to hospital after collapsing on the pitch mid-game during Saturday’s Euro 2020 Group B opening game between Denmark and Finland.

This was confirmed in a statement released on UEFA’s Twitter handle.

The 29-year-old suddenly fell to the ground near the end of the first half in the game at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Eriksen was given CPR by frantic medics who sprinted onto the pitch as his sobbing teammates formed a protective barrier around him.

The player was then carried off the pitch in a stretcher while receiving oxygen shortly after 6pm – as medics held up white sheets to shield him from prying eyes.

Pictures later showed Eriksen sitting up on the stretcher with his eyes open – as UEFA confirmed he ‘has been stabilised’ in hospital.

“Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET,” UEFA statement read.

“The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.”

A statement on the Instagram page of Herrelandsholdet – the Danish national team reads: “Christian Eriksen is awake and his condition remains stable. He remains admitted to the National Hospital for further examinations. The match against Finland is finished tonight. This happens after the players have confirmed Christian is okay. The match will resume at 20.30.”

And the match has ended in Finland 1- 0 Denmark.
