Policemen stationed at the Lekki toll plaza in Lagos have fired teargas canisters and water cannon at youths holding procession to commemorate the 2nd year anniversary of the EndSars protest.

Reports indicate tempers flared around the plaza, Thursday, following the heavy mobilization of security operatives and trucks to the Lekki tollgate area, known as the ground zero of the October 20, 2020 protest against police brutality in the country.

Live images show teargas and water cannon have been used by the police, while an account of harassment against journalists covering the procession had been reported.

Early Thursday morning, youths carrying mock coffins were seen marching through the plaza area, chanting EndSARS slogans. They were later forcefully dispersed by the police who reportedly fired hot water at protesters and journalists reporting the live event.

Recall on 20, 10, 2020, lives were lost and many sustained varying degrees of injuries as military fired shots at unarmed protesters who had camped at the scene for days.

The 2nd year Memorial of EndSars comes as Nigerians prepare for the 2023 General elections amid record excitement seen among young people, including would-be-first-time voters.

Earlier, the memorial procession was announced by Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana, also known as Falz who had been sighted at the toll gate Thursday.
