A proxy political war has sprang up again between immediate past Anambra state governor, Mr Peter Obi and his estranged godson and successor, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state.

This follows a trending allegation by a former commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Anambra, CSP James Nwafor to the effect that he was allegedly ordered by Obi to carry out some dirty works involving inappropriate actions and atrocities against civilians.

The former SARS commander, CSP Nwafor who is a Special Assistant on Security Matters  to Governor Obiano had allegedly made a confessional statement at the weekend about his extra-judicial brutalities.

According to reports, the ex-SARS chief alleged that he was sent by Peter Mr Obi to carry out inappropriate actions against protesting civilians in Anambra state when the later was governor of the state.

Nwafor alleged that it was the  former vice presidential candidate of the PDP, Peter Obi  who ordered him to undertake the  maltreatment of innocent civilians  who were later  dumped in Ezu River. CSP Nwafor was quoted as allegedly narrating how he was instructed by  ex-Governor Obi to carry out the inappropriate actions.

He alleged, ” Obi called me around 11:30 pm in the night on that fateful Thursday and requested for my immediate presence at the governor’s lodge Amawbia, but I told him I’m in Abuja for two days security summit organized by the then-national security adviser, so he said I should send my second in command that there is an operation we must carry out that night, he was smart not to mention it on the phone but l insisted he brief me to enable me to know the kind of men to select, so he had to cut the phone and called back with another line (not his mainline) and he told me we need to terminate selected “Biafran agitators” before they kill his administration in Anambra

“I quickly suggested to him … why not arrest them and prosecute them through the court but Obi said no that he is convinced that Sir Emeka Offor and Engr. Arthur Eze is secretly sponsoring them and will go and take them on bail and still use them against his administration therefore they should be killed”.

But in a swift response, a group which goes by the name of Anambra Integrity Group for ENDSARS, countered Nwafor, accusing Governor Obiano of sponsoring negative narratives against Obi.

The group also asked Obiano to ” to shut up his mouth because it amounts to sheer stupidity, ignorance and show of shame to say you appoint CSP Nwafor as your Special Assistant on Security Matters without a background check on him.”

According to AIG, ” Willie Obiano is displaying his ignorance and it shows how we have sunk in this state called Anambra because as governor, you can’t say you didn’t do a background check on CSP James Nwafor before hiring him as your special assistant on Security Matters.”

” The Governor should as a matter of urgency tender an apology to the people of the state for hiring a now known dreaded man who has now openly confessed to carrying out extra-judicial killings. It’s a shame. For us, he should stop dragging the respected name of Mr Peter Obi into his show of shame. Mr Peter Obi left Anambra state as governor with his high integrity intact, left huge sums in Bank accounts of the state, developed a robust IGR for Anambra… Wat has happened thereafter is for Obiano to answer”, the group said.

Recall that following the Endsars protest across the country and the repeated mention of his Security aide, CSP Nwafor as an accomplice in the dreaded atrocities of the SARS team in Anambra, Governor Obiano had  terminated Nwafor’s appointment.

The Governor had also joined the protesting youths in the state to condemn police brutality in Anambra. Obiano  had said among other things, “Today, I joined youths of our dear State to say #EndPoliceBrutality and I support them because they did not only vote and defend their votes in my 21-over-21 victory but all their requests are genuine and germane, and I oblige to honour them all. James Nwafor, former OC SARS in Anambra State is sacked and will be prosecuted”.

According to Obiano a panel  would be put in place to investigate police brutality and extra-judicial killings in Anambra state, stressing that the  panel will examine  allegations of extrajudicial killings against  CSP Nwafor, whose appointment as a Special Assistant to the Governor has since been terminated.
