The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr. Fuad Laguda, has been declared the winner of the bye-election held in six wards of the council area for Surulere Federal Constituency I.

He was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Prof. Ladipo Adebayo of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), announced the victory.

According to the officer, Laguda secured 11,203 votes, surpassing Mr. Jerry Afemighie of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who garnered 278 votes. The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Adeola Adebanjo, scored 240 votes.

The total votes cast were 11,900, with 138 rejected.

Laguda’s victory on Saturday positions him to replace Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, who had represented the constituency since June 2003.

The seat became vacant on May 29, 2023, following Gbajabiamila’s appointment as the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Lagos is one of the 26 states where INEC conducted re-run and bye-elections for 48 legislative seats across the country.

The affected states include Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
