In response to the mounting security concerns in Ekiti and Ondo States, Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has deployed AIG Abiodun Asabi, and additional officers to Zone 17 Akure.

The move comes as the wave of insecurity spreads to the Southwest part of the country.

In recent weeks, there has been an increase in attacks across Ondo and Ekiti states, culminating in the deaths of two monarchs and the kidnapping of children and teachers in Ekiti state.

The most recent deployment occurred a few days after two Ekiti State monarchs were ambushed and murdered by gunmen who were thought to be bandits in the Ekiti community.

According to reports, the incident involved three traditional rulers: Oba David Babatunde Ogunsakin, Elesun of Esun Ekiti; Oba Adebayo Fatoba, Alara of Ara Ekiti; and Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti, Oba Olatunde Samuel Olusola, Oye local government area for the state.

Alara managed to flee while the attackers shot Elesun and Onimojo to death.

However, in the statement released on Thursday by Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP also berated the recent abduction of school students and teachers in Ekiti state.

The police explained AIG Asabi will coordinate a comprehensive security response to end the unfortunate incidents in Ekiti and parts of Ondo State.

“The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, strongly condemns the recent killings of two traditional rulers and the abduction of school pupils and teachers in Ekiti State. Immediate measures have been taken to address the security challenges, with the deployment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Abiodun Asabi, to Zone 17 Akure. The assigned AIG will coordinate a comprehensive security response to end the unfortunate incidents in Ekiti and parts of Ondo State. Thirteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incidents, and the IGP assures the public of the NPF’s commitment to ensuring justice and preventing a recurrence.

“The public is urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative as efforts are made to restore peace and security in the affected areas,” the statement read.
