  • Residents Flee affected communities
  • Govt attention urgently needed

By Pleasure Onohwakpo

Warri North Oil-producing Community of Tsekelewu-Polubobo in Egbema Kingdom of Warri North Local Govt Area, Delta State, has been submerged in flood water after a few days rainfall.

This is coming on the heels of the delivery of subsidies-removal related palliatives which the state government delivered to the community a few days ago.

Speaking to our correspondent on the sudden flooding in the community, one of the youths, Mr. Monday Yorukeye, said that the water level in the community suddenly rose to an unprecedented level overnight on September 16th, adding that residential buildings, markets, schools, churches and health facilities in the community have all been submerged by flood waters.

According to Yorukeye, the community woke up in the morning of Saturday, September 16, to see that personal effects of the residents and their property were floating on water as the water level had risen beyond expectation.

He recalled that the local and state governments, had in response to an earlier complaint, sent a team led by a Commissioner to inspect the community, but just last night, the water level rose and overflowed everywhere.

He called on the government to urgently send relief materials as well as open up camps in upland areas for those who are displaced to take shelter.

Mostly affected are residential houses, schools, markets and health centres. It was gathered that the First Baptist Church and Pinakiri Zion Church in the community were completely sacked with chairs and other materials floating away.

Also speaking to our correspondent on phone, a youth leader in the community, Comrade Silas Torunwei, noted that “most affected residents have relocated to safer communities in Sapele, Koko and some to communities in Ondo State.

“All Socio-economic activities such as fishing and agricultural production have been completely destroyed by the ravaging flood”, he said.
