The Zonal Head, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Uyo, Edeh Akpa Uchenna, has confirmed that Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Mfon Bassey was being investigated by the Commission.
In a chat with journalists on Friday, the Head of the Zonal office of the EFCC, Uchenna affirmed that Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Bassey was with the Commission for questioning over certain allegations made against him.
The EFCC zonal head said: “One Mfon Bassey, Commissioner for Environment is being investigated by the EFCC, yes, he was with us yesterday (Thursday) and he was with us this morning, this Friday and we are questioning him on certain allegations levelled against him.”
He added: “Though we are investigating him, he is not in our custody, he only reported to us when we invited him and he has been honouring our invitations.”
Recall that there has been increasing concerns that Bassey was allegedly arrested by the EFCC and was still in custody of the anti-graft agency. However, Uchenna denied that the commissioner was being held as he only reported for questioning based on allegations made against him.
It was not clear who made the allegations against the serving Commissioner and what was the nature of the accusations.
The New Diplomat’s Cross River state correspondent reports that Bassey was allegedly invited for questioning on Thursday over allegations of money laundering deals. Also reportedly invited along with Bassey was his account officer with one of the banks(name withheld).
Like every law abiding citizen, Bassey reportedly honoured the invitation and was subsequently asked to go home and report the following day for further questioning.
