Edo State governor and Peoples Democratic party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr Godwin Obaseki and his estranged godfather and immediate past governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole are once again locked in a fiery war of words ahead of September 19 governorship polls.
Mr Obaseki who vowed to make his predecessor and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, politically irrelevant by defeating the APC at the September 19 election said he will ultimately triumph over Oshiomhole.
But Oshiomhole, who fought very hard in 2016 to install Obaseki as his successor would have none of these. According to him, Obaseki has not only failed the Edo state people but has totally betrayed the trust of the people as he is concerned about embarking on non-existent projects that are only on paper.

” He has totally betrayed the trust of the people. Every project is MoU…. Go round the state and hear how the people are complaining about him. There is nothing to show for four years. So the people are totally against Godwin Obaseki,” he added.
Obaseki on his part stated that the battle over who wins the forthcoming election in the state was between him and Oshiomhole, saying that he does not have any quarrel with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Recall there has been no love lost between Obaseki and his predecessor, Oshiomhole over the governance of the state which has snowballed into a showdown between both actors.
This epic battle has not been without casualties as Oshiomhole lost his position as national chairman of the APC while Obaseki similarly failed to secure the ticket of the ruling APC for his re-election bid as he was disqualified on grounds of alleged certificate issues, among other reported irregularities.

Governor Obaseki who spoke again at the weekend during a PDP campaign rally held at Ward 8 and 10 at Edaiken market in Egor LGA, said, “We had democracy in 1999, a Child that was born 22 years ago, is the child not old enough to be a man by now? This democracy will continue and even beyond us by the grace of God.”
“You came and do your own and another comes, allow him to play his own part and leave. That man is very dangerous. He knows the right thing. See the party they put him, he destroyed it… This fight is between me and Oshiomhole. The fight is not between me and Ize-Iyamu. We will bury Oshiomhole politically. We have retired him and on September 19, we will bury him politically”, Obaseki boasted.
Oshiomhole, while responding to his immediate successor’s claim described Obaseki as an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) governor who has failed the Edo people because he has totally destroyed vital institutions in the state against the wishes and aspirations of the people. According to Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu knows Edo state and understands it dynamics perfectly well as someone who grew up in Edo, schooled in Edo, lives in Edo and works in Edo state. To him, this is unlike Obaseki who would run back to Lagos as soon as the governorship elections is over, and he thus not interested in accountability because he doesn’t live among the people.
He added: “Obaseki has abused the trust of Edo people. With our permanent voter cards, we shall punish Obaseki on September 19. Ize-Iyamu will not repeat the mistakes of Obaseki. Ize-Iyamu will take Edo State to the next level. Obaseki pretended for almost eight years, while he did not believe in what I was doing as the governor.”
