President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for peace and civility as Edo State gears up for its governorship election on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday, Tinubu implored all stakeholders, including governorship candidates, political parties, and their supporters, to conduct themselves in a manner that upholds democracy and respects the will of the people.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of peaceful elections. He stated that as President he believes in the voters’ ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders. The statement added:”President Tinubu emphasises that democracy thrives on civility, tolerance, patience, and respect for the rules of the game.”

The President went further to commend the efforts of the candidates and political parties in their campaigns, which he noted have centred on the key issues affecting the people of Edo State. These issues include economic growth, improving livelihoods, and contributing to the nation’s overall development.

Tinubu also urged citizens to resolve any electoral disputes through legitimate channels. According to Onanuga, “President Tinubu expresses unwavering confidence in the professionalism and integrity of security agencies and INEC officials. He urges them to remain impartial and avoid any actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.”

The New Diplomat reports that the Edo state eligible registered voters are going to the polls to vote for the candidate of their choice on September 21, 2024.

Dr Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) are among the leading candidates for the top job of Edo State.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu disclosed that a total of 2.6 million individuals are registered to vote in the forthcoming September 21, 2024 governorship election of Edo State.
