  • “You Don’t Have The Right To Suspend Us”, Lawmakers Fire Back

By Abiola Olawale

The Edo State House of Assembly erupted into a rowdy session on Monday as the Speaker, Hon Blessing Agbebaku hit the gravel on the suspension of three lawmakers.

During plenary on Monday, Agbebaku said the decision to suspend the three lawmakers was because of an alleged plot to impeach him and other Principal Officers Council, POC.

The New Diplomat reports that suspended lawmakers are two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and one All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers are Okogbe Ojeneh Donald, (PDP, Akoko-Edo II), Addeh Emankhu Isibor, (APC, Esan North-East I), and Iyamu Bright, (PDP, Orhionnwon II).

Agbebaku, who said the trio were suspended indefinitely, alleged that they plotted to change the house’s leadership. He alleged that external forces were influencing the three suspended members to cause chaos and remove the leadership of the house.

He also claimed that some persons brought native doctors into the house at midnight on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, to make some demonic incantations and dropped charms in the assembly complex.

However, the suspended lawmakers kicked against the decision, turning the plenary into a rowdy session.

One of the three suspended lawmakers was heard screaming, “Mr Speaker, you do not have the right to unilaterally suspend any member(s) of the house.

“You must call for votes. Allow members to vote on the matter, they shouted.

The Speaker, thereafter adjourned plenary abruptly.

The New Diplomat recalls that this comes after the Edo State Assembly impeached the former Deputy of the state, Philip Shaibu.

It would be recalled that Shaibu was accused of disclosing government secrets and perjury.
