  • Keyamo: ‘Nothing Serious’ About Tinubu’s Slips.. Obama, Biden Make Gaffes Too

The latest Freudian slip by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has again drawn reactions and memes from Nigerians.

Tinubu, who had made several gaffes in recent campaign speeches, at the APC rally in Lagos on Saturday, while urging Nigerians to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), erroneously referred to it as “APV…APC”

“Greatest Nigerian youths… Are you great? God bless you. Go and take your PVC and you vote APC. Do you love me? Go and take your APV, APC and you must vote. You must go that morning,” he said.

According to psychoanalytic experts, ‘Freudian slip occurs when you’re meant to say one thing but instead say something entirely different.’

Spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar/PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Senator Dino Melaye, in his reaction urged the former Lagos State governor to “get well soon.”

He wrote, “Why are these people wicked to this man? He called PVC, APV and corrected himself by calling it APC. Advance Dementia leleyi oooo. Get well soon Tinubu. SDM”

Tinubu’s latest slip has been headlining 2023 conversations online again as this was not the first of the slips recorded against Tinubu.

At the official flag-off of his campaign in Jos, Plateau State, the APC standard-bearer was heard saying ‘God bless PD..APC’ to the dismay of his own supporters and party chieftains standing on the rostrum alongside Tinubu, whose state of health has never ceased to make news headline as it has generated months-long concerns and speculations among the Nigerian public.

It would also be recalled Tinubu, while praising Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai was heard commending the governor as a leader who has a vision of turning “rotten situation to a bad one.”

In his own reaction, Spokesperson, Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo (SAN) on Saturday saw no wrongdoing in Tinubu’s Freudian slips as he said the slips made by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi had probably gone unreported.

Keyamo, Minister of State, Labour and Employment, added that the best of speakers like Barack Obama have made speech errors during campaigns in the past, including U.S President Joe Biden often taunted as ‘Sleepy Joe’ by his predecessor, Donald Trump each time he makes a gaffe.

Keyamo said: “I haven’t seen any headline anywhere about Peter Obi describing Nasarawa as a country. When he (Obi) said Nasarawa is a country and not a state, did anybody make any news out of it?”

“Obi has been fact-checked so many times and has been caught lying openly about statistics, is it because of age?”

“The best speakers in the world, the most intelligent person, once you are on the campaign trail, you can make mistakes. Go and check candidates of the most civilised countries of the world including Britain make gaffes. Barack Obama made a lot of gaffes, US President Joe Biden made a lot of gaffes”.

“When you are on the campaign trail of four to five months and you are speaking every day, every minute to every people, you are bound to make slips here and there. There is nothing serious about it. As long as you are sure of what you are saying and not saying something totally off-key, there is no problem at all”

“They are so much interested in Asiwaju that the moment he begins to talk, every single member of the opposition parties is tuned to listening to whatever he wants to say. They listen to every sentence, alphabet and every word he pronounces.

“We in the APC are happy about that. It shows the level of interest they have in our candidate,” Keyamo told the press, Saturday.

Meanwhile, Tinubu, while addressing the sea of heads who thronged his rally at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos promised to run a government of progressive thinking, if elected.

He said: “I don’t think anything is missing here today. We are going to continue progressive government in 2023.

“I am indeed grateful to the people of Lagos State. I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. It is a broom revolution,” adding “We will do our best for Nigeria.”
