Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to resign as the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party. He has also announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister.

Trudeau also announced that he will remain as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader,” Trudeau, who has been in power since 2015, told reporters in Ottawa.

This announcement comes amidst a backdrop of growing discontent within the Liberal Party, plummeting popularity in public opinion polls. There is also inflation in the country as some of the post-covid 19 policies appear to have not addressed the economic concerns of Canadians.

It also comes after significant internal pressure following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in December 2024.

With his resignation, the stage is now set for a leadership contest within the Liberal Party.

The situation comes amidst the looming threat of increment of import tariffs by the United States President-elect Donald Trump.
