President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made changes to the leadership of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) by sacking Dr Hamid Bobboyi from his position as Executive Secretary and appointing Aisha Garba as his replacement.
This was contained in a press statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu charged Garba to drive the renewed hope and vision of providing and supporting quality education as well as ensuring that Nigerian children become globally competitive.
The New Diplomat reports that Garba is a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank.
She brings more than twenty-four years of experience driving impactful programmes in education for human and economic development, working in Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Kenya, the USA, and the United Kingdom.
Garba, with over 15 years of experience at the World Bank, has also led the design and management of education programs from inception to impact assessment. She is actively engaged in human development and leverages her extensive network with governments and partners to deliver sustainable solutions in basic education, especially in fragile settings.
Previously, she contributed to meeting Nigeria’s Millennium Development Goals and has consulted for various organizations, including the World Bank and DFID.
She is an alumna of Petra American University in Jordan, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts combined degree in English and Computer Studies in 2000. She later got a Master’s in International Development at the University of Birmingham in the UK in 2007.
