The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has finally apprehended a controversial cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye popularly known as Bobrisky.
It was gathered that the anti-graft agency arrested Bobrisky over alleged abuse of naira, spraying of notes, and currency mutilation. According to reports, Bobrisky was arrested in Lagos on Wednesday night and has been detained at the Lagos Command of the EFCC.
Confirming his arrest on Thursday, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, noted that Bobrisky would be charged in court.
Oyewale said: “Bobrisky is with us. He was arrested last night in Lagos and he is at our Lagos command. We arrested him for alleged abuse of naira notes, spraying of naira notes, and currency mutilation, among others.
“We are very serious about restoring the dignity of the naira.
“Though our investigation is still ongoing, he will be charged to court soon.”
The New Diplomat reports that Bobrisky has been embroiled in several controversies over the past weeks. Many Nigerians had wondered why the security agents had not arrested the popular crossdressers.
A controversial activist Martins Otse aka VeryDarkMan had championed the call for the arrest of Bobrisky for his transgender lifestyle.
However, reacting to discussions on cross-dressing and sexuality on social media, on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi explained that while the crossdressing lifestyle might not align with societal norms, it is not a criminal offense under the Nigerian law.
Adejobi said that certain cases are hard to prove without evidence, and as such, many who cross-dress are often accused of other crimes, and until proof is found, these individuals cannot be arrested.
