President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the appointment of Mr Joseph Tegbe as the Director-General and global liaison for the Nigeria-China strategic partnership.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga, in the statement, explained that Tegbe’s appointment comes following the agreements reached during Tinubu’s visit to China in early September 2024.

It would be recalled that at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, President Xi Jinping pledged 360 billion yuan (approximately $51 billion) in new financing for African nations over the next three years.

Tegbe is expected to lead day-to-day operations, engage continuously with the Chinese counterparts, and ensure that all deliverables are met and synchronised with national development goals.

The statement reads in part: “As the leader of the strategic partnership, he will oversee day-to-day operations, engage continuously with Chinese counterparts, and ensure all deliverables are aligned with national development goals.

“In the strategic plan, he will outline specific deliverables, timelines, and key performance indicators for each area of cooperation, including priority projects, projected investments, and expected socioeconomic outcomes.”

The New Diplomat reports that Tegbe was born on the 21st of March, 1966, in Oyo Town and of Ibadan ancestral descent. He hails from Jegede Compound in the Labo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

He had his early education at St Mary’s RCM School, Oyo; Federal Government College, Ogbomoso; and University of Ife, Ile–Ife. He was a national scholar and awards-winning student at the Secondary and University levels and graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) with a First Class Degree in Civil Engineering in 1988.

He is also an alumnus of Lagos Business School, Nigeria; INSEAD France; Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Business School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (FCIT), and Certified in Governance Enterprise IT (CGEIT).

Tegbe, 58, brings nearly 35 years of experience in business strategy. He was the Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG in Africa, with responsibilities extending to the Middle East.
