The Federal government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 in a London hospital.
This announcement, made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a seven-day national mourning period to commemorate Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and national development.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the holiday provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s life and legacy.
The statement, issued through the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, also extended condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister said.
Recall that Buhari’s burial was postponed from Monday to Tuesday, July 15, 2025, after his repatriation of his remains from the United Kingdom couldn’t be completed in time.
His burial will now take place in Daura, the hometown of the late president, at 2pm on the same day.
