A prominent Nigerian politician, Senator John Azuta-Mbata has been elected as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Azuta-Mbata emerged as the President General at the stakeholders meeting of the Igbo Socio-Cultural organization at the old government lodge in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, on Friday.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo is a socio-cultural organization aimed at promoting the interests of the Igbo people.

The New Diplomat reports that Azuta-Mbata is a notable figure in Nigerian politics, particularly from Rivers State.

He was born in January 1960, and earned a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Ibadan.

He has also been involved with institutions like the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, where he served on the governing council.

He was elected as a Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial District in Rivers State during the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic in 1999 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He was re-elected in 2003. His tenure included roles in various Senate committees like Defense, Finance & Appropriation (where he served as vice chairman), and others related to public works and housing.

After his time in the Senate, Azuta-Mbata has been involved in business, notably as Chairman and CEO of Monier Construction Company Nigeria Ltd.
