United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General, Mrs. Amina Muhammed, has called for justice following the mob killing of a second-year female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State, identified as Deborah Samuel, who was lynched and set ablaze by her colleagues over alleged blasphemy.

Amina, who is Nigeria’s former Minister of Environment, made this known via her verified official Twitter handle, @AminaJMohammed, on Tuesday, describing her murder as “brutal” and “senseless.”

According to her, “Justice must be done for the senseless, brutal killing of the young Deborah Samuel in Nigeria.

“Religions should not be misinterpreted to preach violence when they promote peace.

“My prayers are with the family and for the repose of her soul”.

It would be recalled that Sokoto State Police Command, on Monday, arraigned two suspects, Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci, before a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting in the State, for their alleged involvement in the crime.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges while the defence counsel, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, applied for their bail on liberal terms, citing constitutional provisions and sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

The court in its ruling reserved the ruling on the bail application and ordered that the suspects be remanded at a correctional centre.
