…Reels out recent major security breakthroughs by Command
The Delta State Police Command has charged members of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, (NAPPS), Delta State Chapter to be proactive in adopting security measures to monitor and prevent crimes in their various schools.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ari Mohammed who gave this charge in Abraka, headquarters of Ethiope East Local Government Area of the State on Tuesday October 12, on the occasion of a programme organized by NAPPS, proffered a wide range of proactive security measures which school owners and administrators could adopt to ensure the protection of lives and properties in their premises.
The Delta State Police Boss who was represented by the Divisional Police Officer, Abraka Police Division, SP Fabian Ayameh, noted that there are various proactive measures including robust policing of schools to nip crime in the bud, physical infrastructure such as security gates and fences, as well as electronic security devices that could help to protect, prevent and detect criminal activities.
Reeling out several security tips to the organizers of the programme which has the theme: ‘Curbing Rising Spate of Insecurity; Way Forward for Education in Nigeria’ the State Police Command disclosed that school owners are free to design their peculiar security architecture that suit their individual purposes, adding that the Police was ever ready to offer security advise on protection and prevention of crime.
He said: “Individual schools are at liberty to design their security structure to suit the cardinal purpose for which the school was set up. You can adopt a wide range of crime prevention strategies to reduce the likelihood and consequences of criminal activities on their site. This can be achieved by implementing physical, electronic and procedural security measures that deter, deny, delay and detect criminal activities.
“Schools may seek assistance from the Security Advisory Unit if they require additional security advice and support to address their security risk.”
The Commissioner of Police also tasked school owners and administrators to always endeavour to look out for pupils and staff with criminal tendencies as well as monitor their pupils/students with special focus on the female ones among them.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week, the State Commissioner of Police, ACP Ari Mohammed had warned men and officers of the Command to desist from all forms of corruption and incivility to members of the public.
The Commissioner of Police who gave the warning during an enlarged meeting with Area Commanders, DPOs, Tactical Commanders and other officers in the Command, stressed that the State Command under his watch will not tolerate such criminal acts among its men, adding that under cover security measures shall be activated to check the activities of erring men and officers.
The CP who cited the case of two erring officers who were dismissed recently, also ordered that the ‘stop and search’ security measures of men on duties should be intensified just as he also encouraged constant raids on black spot/criminal hideouts throughout the state.
Similarly, the Police Public Relations Officer of the State, DSP Bright Edafe, in a press release, reeled out some of the major breakthroughs made by the Command in the past one week which, according to him, include the successful raid conducted by men of Ovwian Aladja Division on criminal hideout/black spots in Ujewu Community on October 11, 2021, where many suspects who were seen smoking weeds suspected to be Indian Hemps took to their heels on sighting the police. Two of the suspects were said to have been arrested and, upon search on them by the police, a locally made cut-to-size gun and some wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian Hemp were recovered from them.
The State Police Boss also disclosed that “on 10/10/2021 at about 1030 hrs, patrol team attached to Ovwian Aladja Division, while on stop and search duty, intercepted a commercial bus carrying some passengers. The operatives, upon searching the passengers, recovered one locally made single-barrel gun concealed in a bag of Garri. The suspect one Pigi Kelvin ‘m’ of Ututuoama town Ughelli South LGA, age 42yrs, was arrested”, adding that investigation was ongoing.
