The Dangote Group has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mrs. Ruth Otabor, sister to Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma “Phyna” Otabor, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a recent accident involving one of the company’s trucks in Auchi, Edo State.
In a statement on Sunday, the company said Otabor, who has been receiving full medical and financial support from its officials and insurance partners, passed away despite committed efforts to save her life, including arrangements to fly her to India for advanced treatment.
“Arrangements had been made for her to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her doctors. Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today,” the statement read.
Dangote Group noted that since the incident, it had borne all medical expenses and supported deceased family, reaffirming that safety, accountability, and compassion remain central to its operations as a company.
Recall that Otabor was hit by a truck on Wednesday, August 13, near Auchi Polytechnic, in Edo State. The deceased had just graduated from Auchi Polytechnic at the time. The truck reportedly crushed her leg, sparking outrage on social media with the hashtag #JusticeForRuth trending widely.
Celebrities, activists, and fans had demanded justice and stricter road safety enforcement, questioning the training of heavy-duty truck drivers in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the company has assured it remains committed to improving its safety systems while offering condolences to the bereaved family.
