Students can return back to school without undergoing Covid-19 test, the federal government said on Monday.

Instead the Federal Ministry of Education said as many schools in Nigeria reopen from Monday, only temperature check should be carried out on the returning students.

The ministry in a statement released by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Bem Goong, warned school authorities against “asking students or parents to undergo COVID-19 test before they are accepted in their schools.”

“The Federal Ministry of Education says no Covid-19 Test is required for returning students to be admitted into their schools.

“Only temperature checks should be carried out on students and any other person crossing any school gate.

“School authorities should therefore refrain from asking students or parents to undergo COVID-19 test before they are accepted in their schools.”

Many states in the country reopened schools on Monday following the federal government’s nod in support of school resumption nationwide.

But there is anxiety in the air over students and teachers’ safety, as well as students’ adherence to Covid-19 protocols as Nigeria continues to see record high Covid-19 infections.

Just on Sunday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 1,444 new cases and 15 additional deaths as a result of the Covid-19 disease in the country.

The 15 deaths recorded on Sunday is the country’s second highest number of daily fatality till date.
