The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday, January 18, 2020 announced 1444 new cases and 15 additional deaths from Covid-19 disease in the country.

The 15 deaths recorded on Sunday is the country’s second highest number of daily fatality till date.

Recall The New Diplomat had on Thursday, 14 January reported that the second wave of the pandemic is upon Nigeria with the 23 deaths recorded that day which is the highest in the country since the outbreak of Covid-19.

Notably, the country is currently recording an uptick in the number of deaths as a total number of 53 fatalities were recorded in the country in the last 5 days between 14 – 17 January.

The record is as follows: Thursday, (23), Friday (8), Saturday (7) and Sunday, (15) January, 2020.

The 1444 new infections bring the country’s total cases to 110,387, while its discharged cases are 89,317 and its death toll has risen to 1435.

A total number of 1,154,138 samples have been tested in the country and Nigeria’s active cases now stand at 19,635.

Lagos State which is the hot spot of the pandemic led with a total number of 40,624 confirmed cases, FCT followed with 10,686 and Plateau 6753.

The 1444 new cases were reported from 21 states: “Lagos-901 Plateau-136 Kaduna-57 FCT-54 Ebonyi-53 Akwa Ibom-52 Nasarawa-32 Osun-29 Ogun-28 Imo-16 Oyo-16 Edo-15 Kano-14 Rivers-10 Ekiti-7 Borno-6 Abia-5 Benue-4 Yobe-4 Kebbi-3 Anambra-2.”
