Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice have both been convicted of organ trafficking in the United Kingdom.

Ekweremadu, a former Nigerian deputy Senate president with his wife, alongside their doctor Obinna Obeta were found culpable of violating the Modern Slavery Act by the court.

The trio were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to exploit him after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.

The judge, Justice Jeremy Johnson, will pass a sentence at a later date.

It would be recalled that the Metropolitan police in June 2022 said that Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu and Ike Ekweremadu, who are 55 and 60 years old respectively were remanded in custody and arraigned at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court.

In February 2022, the 21-year-old, the court said was falsely presented to a private renal unit at Royal Free hospital in London as a cousin to Ekweremadu’s daughter Sonia in a failed attempt to persuade medics to carry out an £80,000 transplant.

For a fee, a medical secretary at the hospital acted as an Igbo translator between the man and the doctors to help try to convince them he was an altruistic donor, the court heard.
