• Urges Candidates to Recheck Scores in 24 Hours

By Abiola Olawale

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an apology to candidates and the public following what it called the discovery of technical glitches in the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

This development has triggered massive controversy and concerns among members of the public. While some condemn the examination body for what it described as tardiness, some feel otherwise.

The examination body, in response, to these glitches has announced a temporary suspension of its result-checking portal, advising candidates to recheck their scores after 24 hours as it works to resolve the issue.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 7, 2025, by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC’s Nigeria headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, the council acknowledged that the errors stemmed from a new anti-malpractice measure—paper serialization—applied to core subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics.

According to the statement, this innovation, aimed at curbing examination malpractice, unexpectedly introduced technical bugs that affected the accuracy of some candidates’ results.

WAEC said it expresses deep regret for any inconvenience caused to the affected candidates, urging those who have already checked their results to do so again after 24 hours for updated information.

The statement reads in part: “We appreciate the patience and understanding of our candidates and the public as we work diligently to correct this matter.

“WAEC remains steadfast in its mission to uphold excellence, fairness, and transparency in all our assessment processes.”
