Congo’s Minister of Information Thierry Moungalla has denied an attempt to oust President Denis Nguesso.

This trails reports on social media space in the country that the long serving president has been over thrown.

President Nguesso, 78, has been in power for 38 years.

In a post shared on X, the minister said the report was fake news urging the people to continue with their activities.

“URGENT – Fanciful information suggests serious events that are underway at #Brazzaville,” he wrote on the social media platform with the statement also posted on the government’s website.

He further wrote: “The Government denies this fake news. We reassure public opinion about the calm that reigns and invite people to calmly go about their activities.”

It would be recalled in the early hours of July 26, Niger presidential guard soldiers took over power from democratically elected president, Mohammed Bazoum.

Bazoum was placed on house arrest before he was released to his family.

The West Africa power bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) intervened in the crisis demanding the military return power to President Bazoum but the military junta refused to heed the call despite pressure.

While the crisis continued to create uncertainties in Niger, the Gabonese military junta launched a coup against President Ali Bongo Ondimba on Wednesday, August 30, few days after the general election in the country where Ondimba was re-elected for a third term in office since 2009.

Nguesso has been in power since 1979 but his reign was interrupted in 1992 due to the civil war. He then returned in 1997 to continue from where he left.
