The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reportedly dealing with internal issues involving some operatives who allegedly misappropriated some recovered assets.
Reports by PUNCH newspaper revealed that the purported misconduct has led to disquiet within the anti-graft agency, prompting an audit of recovered assets across its zonal offices.
It would be recalled that EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, in a press statement issued on January 6, 2025, had revealed that the anti-graft agency was investigating “a trending $400,000 claim of a yet-to-be-identified supposed staff of the EFCC against a sectional head.”
According to reports, the development prompted the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede to order a thorough investigation of all missing items in the agency.
It was gathered that no fewer than 27 operatives were dismissed in 2024 alone for various allegations of misconduct. Meanwhile, this latest incident has reportedly led to the arrest of 10 officers from the Lagos zonal command over allegations of misconduct.
The detained officers are said to be answering questions regarding their inability to account for certain operational items that went missing under their watch.
According to PUNCH report on the subject matter, some of the missing items included gold bars valued at over N1bn and jewelry, worth between $350,000 and $400,000, respectively.
