A Nigerian weightlifter, Adijat Adenike Olarinoye has won Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Olarinoye, a 23-year-old weightlifter recorded a total of 203kg which is a new Commonwealth Games record.

The Osun born weightlifter, had in 2021, won Nigeria’s second gold medal at the International Weightlifting Federation, (IWF) World Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Olarinoye who won her gold in Commonwealth Championship, also broke 20-year-old Nigerian history in the competition by winning a silver and 2 bronze medals in the IWF Championship.

Her gold, one silver and two bronze (silver and bronze won in IWF Championship) all came from 55kg women category.
