Chelsea have broken the Premier League record for wins in a season by beating Sunderland 5-1 to earn their 30th victory of the campaign.

Goals from Willian, Eden Hazard, Pedro and Michy Batshuayi (two) cancelled out an early strike from Javier Manquillo to ensure that Antonio Conte’s men, confirmed as Premier League champions earlier this month, made history on captain John Terry’s 717th Chelsea appearance and final match at Stamford Bridge.

Terry led the Blues out to a guard of honour from Sunderland players and was substituted in the 26th minute with a standing ovation from the home supporters, who had held aloft large commemorative banners and organised a vast tribute in the Shed End in tribute to the 36-year-old prior to kickoff.

With their 30th Premier League victory of the season, Chelsea have broken the competition record set by Jose Mourinho’s title-winning Blues teams in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, who both won 29 of their 38 league matches.

The win also means Conte’s men finish the season with 93 points, a tally beaten only by Chelsea’s first Premier League title-winning side in 2004-05.
