Chelsea Clinch Late Winner Against Newcastle Amid Uncertainty
Chelsea on Sunday continued their fine form as they snatched a dramatic winner against Newcastle in the first game at Stamford Bridge since its owner, Roman Abramovich was slammed with sanctions by the United Kingdom government.
The game was heading towards a goalless draw before Jorginho made a lofted pass to Havertz who calmly put it past Newcastle’s goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, to find the back of the net.
The goal proved enough to secure three points for Chelsea, and as well brighten the mood of fans across the world who are worried about the effect of sanctions slammed on Abramovich.
With the points, Chelsea remains third with 59 points, seven points behind Liverpool who is in second position and ten points behind Manchester City who sits on top of the Premier League log.
Earlier, before the game, Chelsea’s technical and performance advisor Petr Cech admitted that the club is having to live “day-by-day” in the wake of economic sanctions placed on Abramovich by the UK government.
Cech, who was Chelsea’s goalkeeper for 11 years, between 2004 and 2015, noted that the sanctions announced last week may hinder the club from completing the ongoing Premier league season.
Abramovich was sanctioned as a part of the government’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, meaning his assets, including Chelsea Football Club, have been frozen.
Though the government said it has granted Chelsea a special licence to continue operating, but there are fears they will quickly run out of money as the club is unable to sign players, renew contracts, sell tickets to matches or merchandise, with limits also on the amount of money they are allowed to spend on travel to away games.
Speaking with Sky sports, Cech said, “Cech added: “We have to admit that we go day-by-day because we don’t have this in our hands.
“The conversations are going on so that we can actually operate in the way that we can finish the season.
“I believe that for us to be able to, to carry on to finish the season would obviously help everybody involved in the Premier League.”
