Chelsea football club have confirmed that Bruce Buck has stepped down as chairman after 19 years at Stamford Bridge.

The American has been a central figure at Stamford Bridge since his appointment in 2003 but leaves at the end of the month following the departure of owner Roman Abramovich.

The New York-born lawyer, 76, advised Abramovich during his 2003 purchase of the Blues and was ultimately appointed to the board of the club by the Russian billionaire.

Chelsea’s men’s team won five Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and five FA Cups during Buck’s time as chairman, while the women’s side have grown to become one of the strongest sides in the game today.

The club say Buck will continue to support them in a senior advisory role.

Reacting to the news, Buck said:

“I am proud to have helped Chelsea realise great success on the pitch and make a positive impact in the community,” said Buck.

The owners have a compelling vision for Chelsea’s future, and I look forward to helping them achieve it in this new role alongside our incredible staff, players, coaches and supporters.”

New Blues owner Todd Boehly took over in west London last month, and the American thanked Buck for his achievements during his time at Stamford Bridge.

“Bruce has led Chelsea Football Club to the highest levels of international and domestic football, while also developing one of the most active social responsibility projects in the sport,” he said.

“We thank Bruce for his service and his commitment to the club.”
