The raging drama in the 18 Local Government Areas in Edo State took a twist on Friday as the councillors in Uhumwonde, Orhionmwon and Owan East LGAs purportedly impeached the chairmen and their deputies in their local governments, respectively.
The “impeached” chairmen and their deputies were accused of misappropriation of public funds and dereliction of duties.
Violence, however, broke out in Uhunmwonde LGA of the state, as the chairman of the local government area, Kenneth Adodo was impeached and this left many people injured and the LGA property destroyed.
Also, councillors in Owan West on the same day allegedly impeached Aminu Okodo-Kadiri and Clement Ojebuovbo the chairman and deputy of the LGA, respectively
In Orhionmwon LGA, it was violence galore after councillors impeached Daniel Osariemen who doubles as the house leader over allegations of “unruly and inappropriate actions.”
He was accused of rallying unknown persons to the local secretariat in a bid to take over the leadership structure.
Eghe Ogbemudia, and Frank Osawe, both chairman and deputy chairman of Egor LGA suffered the same fate of impeachment by the councillors of Egor LGA on 27, December 2024.
Recall that Edo State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, had earlier written a petition to the House over the refusal of the chairmen to submit financial records of their local government to the state government.
The governor described the chairmen’s action as an act of insubordination and gross misconduct and requested the State Assembly to look into the matter.
The state Assembly proceeded to order the immediate suspension of the chairmen and their deputies following deliberation on the petition.
