Following reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has officially devalued the naira to sell for N630 to $1 in the early hours of Thursday, the Apex bank has debunked such reports as fake and purely imaginary.

In a statement issued by its Director of Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, the bank said that the news report, which the newspaper said was an exclusive, was full of lies and terrible speculations that reflects the ignorance of the newspaper on the workings of the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the exchange rate at the investors’ & Exporters’ window traded this morning (June 1, 2023) at N465 /USD $1 and has been stable around this rate for a while,” he added.

AbdulMumin advised Media practitioners to verify their facts from the CBN before publishing in order not to misinform the public.

However Nigerians who found the CBN clarification short on information reacted angrily to the Apex institution’s response which they found inadequate. See some of reactions to the CBN tweet below;

So what did CBN do?
What does CBN intend to do?
How did Daily Trust get whatever news they published?

Make a proper rebuttal instead of tweeting like penking.

Then tell us what CBN did! That’s how to make a proper rebuttal! Don’t just say a news is fake, tell us what is correct. It’s poor communication that breeds all manner of misunderstanding and fuels fake news.

How about this
“Contrary to circulating news, the CBN has not devalued the Naira. We urge the public to disregard these reports. A comprehensive statement clarifying our monetary policy will be released in due time. We appreciate your patience and understanding.”?

This is for Twitter. The best approach, imv

Why would they release a “comprehensive statement clarifying” their monetary policy in due time when nothing has changed?

A media outlet reported a non-existent news, or misreported regular course of transaction as devaluation
