Argentine professional footballer who also doubles as former Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has announced his retirement from football.
The 38-year-old, who spent four seasons at City between 2009 and 2013, confirmed in a TV interview that he has called time on his playing career.
Tevez has not played competitively since leaving boyhood club Boca Juniors in June 2021 and said losing his father in February of last year was a decisive factor in his decision to hang up his boots.
In his words:
“I have retired, it is confirmed,” he said in an interview with America TV.
“They offered me many things, including from the United States. But that’s it, I have given everything.
“Playing the last year was very difficult but I was able to see my old man. I stopped playing because I lost my number one fan.”
Tevez arrived at City from Manchester United in the summer of 2009 and went on to score 74 goals in 148 appearances for the Club.
An exceptional talent with a burning desire to win and tireless work-rate, the Argentine was very much City’s talisman in the years immediately after the takeover.
He scored 29 goals in his debut season and the following campaign won the Premier League Golden Boot whilst captaining Roberto Mancini’s side to FA Cup glory to end the Club’s 35-year wait for a major trophy.
A fall out with Mancini saw him miss three months of the 2011/12 season, but he returned in March and scored a memorable hat-trick against Norwich City en route to our first Premier League title.
Tevez began his career at Boca, making his debut at the age of 16 and winning the Copa Libertadores in 2003 before a move to Corinthians materialised two years later.
He spent two seasons in Brazil and then made the switch to the Premier League, where his played an instrumental role in saving West Ham United from relegation in the 2006/07 campaign.
A two-season loan spell at United preceded his arrival at City and, following his departure in 2013, he headed to Juventus, where he won four trophies in two years before returning to Boca.
The striker spent a single season in China with Shanghai Shenhua in 2017 and then joined Boca for a third time, spending the remainder of his career at La Bombonera.
