July 6, 2024 would have gone like every other normal day. However, about twelve enterprising, young Nigerian-Canadian undergraduates changed the dynamics, making that sunny day a historic one in Toronto, Ontario.

It was the inaugural Let’s Bet High School Alumni Tournament, which took place at Heartlake Secondary School in the Greater Toronto Area(GTA), Ontario. The event was a resounding success, bringing together approximately 300 enthusiastic attendees for a lively celebration of community spirit and athletic talent. The generous donations from attendees supported a fantastic cause, while the players delivered a thrilling display of energy and passion on the field. The event was a testament to the power of community and the enduring bonds formed through shared experiences in their various high schools in Ontario.

One of the key figures behind the Let’s Bet High School Alumni Tournament is one of the event organizers, Akpotowho Oma-Djebah. Akpotowho, a dedicated member of Let’s Bet Corp, was inspired to create the tournament as a way to bring together the Peel  Region Soccer community for a fun and meaningful gathering. His leadership and organizational skills were instrumental in ensuring the success of the event, from securing the venue to coordinating volunteers and sponsors.

Akpotowho’s passion for the organization and community shone through in every aspect of the tournament, setting the stage for an unforgettable day of camaraderie and competition.

Another influential individual who contributed to the success of the tournament is Sylvester Mekwuye, another strong member of Let’s Bet Corp. Sylvester volunteered his time and expertise to help organize the tournament as well as  coach his high school alumni team; Cardinal Ambrozic. His presence on the field inspired both players and spectators alike, creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere that was felt throughout the event.

Sylvester dedication to the students and the school played a crucial role in making the tournament a memorable and uplifting experience for all involved.

The impact of the Let’s Bet High School Alumni Tournament extended far beyond the confines of the playing field. The generous donations from attendees supported a fantastic cause, raising funds for the Sick Kids Program. According to the organizers these contributions will help ensure that people with vulnerable conditions have access to needed resources and opportunities to succeed both academically and athletically. Additionally, the tournament served as a platform for alumni to reconnect with old friends, forge new relationships, and create lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Looking ahead, the success of the inaugural Let’s Bet High School Alumni Tournament body will help foster future interactions and consolidate on the success recorded.

With a strong foundation of community support and enthusiasm, the tournament is poised to grow and evolve in the years to come. Organizers have already begun planning for next year’s tournament, with new and exciting additions in store, to make the event even bigger and better than this year’s . By harnessing the spirit of camaraderie and competition that defined this year’s tournament, the organizers are confident that the event will continue to thrive and make a positive impact on the Peel Region community.

The event was made possible by the dedication and hard work of all 12 members of Let’s Bet Corp, a thriving start-up floated by these twelve young, enterprising University undergraduates-Ogooluwa Olafusi, Akpotowho Oma-Djebah, Fiyin Osundina, Peter Igiozee, Edward Dannsah, Sylvester Mekwuye, Osagie Osagiede, Gado Omede, Tobiloba Temowo, Krisney Manuel, Mathew Arogbo, Mene Eruotor.

Their relentless zeal, passion and leadership helped I’m making the tournament a memorable and impactful experience for all involved. With the support of generous donors and enthusiastic participants, the tournament raised funds for a worthy cause and laid the groundwork for future events that will continue to strengthen the bonds of the Peel Region community.
