Greg Fergus made history, becoming the first Black Canadian to be elected House of Commons Speaker.

The New Diplomat checks revealed that Fergus has historic family and ancestral roots Nibo town near Awka in Anambra state.

Fergus was first elected in 2015 with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals. Fergus has been serving the people of Hull–Aylmer, a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, in Parliament since October 2015.

He was re-elected in 2019 and 2021, respectively. He has served as parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, the president of the Treasury Board, the minister of digital government and the industry minister. He was also a member of several House of Commons committees, including finance. He chaired the parliamentary Black Caucus.

Fergus holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of International Relations from Carleton University. He has also undertaken graduate studies in international relations. During his time as a student, he served as a House of Commons page, part of the 1988–1989 cohort.
