President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday wrote the Senate, seeking the screening and confirmation of Justice Olukayade Ariwoola as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).

The letter was read during Tuesday’s plenary session. In the letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, Buhari is seeking the confirmation of Ariwoola as the substantive CJN in accordance with Section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

Recall that Buhari had last month sworn in Ariwoola as the acting CJN following the sudden resignation of Justice Ibrahim Tanko on health grounds.

Although Buhari had appointed and sworn in Ariwoola in acting capacity last month, it is mandatory that his appointment be confirmed by the Senate.

Justice Ariwoola was born on the 22nd of August 1958 and is currently the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court.

He was formerly a Justice of the Court of Appeal and was elevated to the Supreme Court bench following his transfer from the State High Court of Oyo State.

Ariwoola started his educational career in his home town of Iseyin at the Local Authority Demonstration School, Oluwole, in the Iseyin Local government of Oyo State between 1959 and 1967.
