President Muhammadu Buhari has specially felicitated with Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on the joyous occasion of his 58th Birthday which comes into effect on 3rd August, 2021.

Buhari, in a powerful message described Senator Omo-Agege, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District in the 9th Senate as a pragmatic leader whose “down-to-earth leadership style” has continued to help in steering the ship of the National Assembly.

President Buhari applauded Omo-Agege for his foresight and generosity in sharing ideas with colleagues at the Senate and for always engendering prosperous relationship in numerous capacities he currently serves in the upper legislative chamber, including as Chairman of Senate Committee on Constitution Review.

In the message released by the President’s Spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, Buhari joined the APC hierarchy and members to celebrate “with the party chieftain whose dedication to good governance and democratic growth remains outstanding,” whose efforts and political sagacity as the leader of the APC South-south caucus has led to the party making massive in-road into states that were hitherto opposition’s strong-hold in the Niger Delta region.

Buhari further poured encomiums on Omo-Agege for his commitment to the development of Delta State and the country over the years, serving in various positions as Commissioner for Special Duties and Secretary to the State Government, before his election to the Senate in 2015.

“The president believes Senator Omo-Agege’s down-to-earth leadership style, coupled with his foresight and generosity in sharing ideas has been most pivotal in the harmonious relationship with lawmakers,” the statement said as President Buhari wished the Deputy Senate President good health and strength to continue his service to God and mankind.

The New Diplomat reports the rise of Senator Omo-Agege, the Obarisi of Urhoboland in politics and governance had been steady and progressive over the past two decades.

Omo-Agege, an erudite lawyer, who hails from the Orogun Clan of the Urhobo in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta was appointed as the Secretary to State Government (SSG) of Delta State in 2007 under the administration of former Governor James Ibori. He had previously served as Commissioner for Special Duties under that administration.

Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, who had in 2002 obtained his master’s degree in law from Tulane University Law School, United States, ran for Senate in 2015 under the platform of the Labour Party of Nigeria, winning the election in style to represent Delta Central Senatorial District on March 28, 2015.

Re-elected as the Senator representing Delta Central under the APC in 2019 general elections, Omo-Agege, on June 11, 2019, emerged as the new Deputy Senate President of the 9th National Assembly with 68 votes cast to beat Senator Ike Ekweremadu with 37 votes. By so doing he became the first Deputy Senate President to ever emerge from Delta State.

Following his purposeful leadership, The New Diplomat recalls the South-South caucus of the APC on Thursday 28th of November 2019 tapped the Deputy Senate President, Omo-Agege, as the leader of the party in the oil-rich region.
