President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Presidency said on Saturday.

The presidency in a press statement said the reconstitution of the Board of the NNPC became imperative following the expiration of the tenure of members of the NNPC Board that were appointed in 2016.

Members of the newly namedĀ  Board include Mohammed Lawal (North West), Tajudeen Umar (North East), Adamu Mahmood Attah (North Central), Senator Magnus Abe (South-South), Dr Stephen Dike (South East), and Chief Pius Akinyelure (South West).

Going by the terms of their appointment, members of the newly namedĀ  board are expected to remain in office for a period of three years.

In a related development,Ā  earlier on Saturday, the demise of NNPC’s immediate past General Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru was announced.

The current NNPC GMD, Mele Kyari, who announced Baru’s death via his Twitter handle said: ā€œMy brother, my friend and my mentor, Dr Maikanti Kachalla Baru, immediate past GMD of NNPC died late last night,ā€ Kyari said. ā€œHe was of exemplary character and disposition. May Allah forgive him and have mercy upon him.ā€

Aged 60, the late former GMD of NNPC reportedly ā€œdied after a brief illness in an Abuja hospital.ā€
