The presidency has described the gruesome killing of 43 farmers in Borno, North-East zone of Nigeria by the Boko Haram terrorists as insane, “senseless” and terribly hurting.

Reports indicate that the 43 farmers were murdered on Saturday as the rampaging terrorists tied them down before slaughtering them all in a manner akin to a terrorizing scene in a tragic Shakespearean drama.

The reports further reveal that the affected farmers were working on a rice fields at Zabarmari, in Jere Local Government area of Borno state, in the troubled North-East zone when the terrorists swooped on them.presidency and Boko Haram Terrorists

The presidency in a statement issued by SSA on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Saturday, condemned the act while expressing grief over the senseless killing of the affected farmers.

According to the statement, the federal government has made available all the necessary support to the country’s military for the protection of the country’s population and territory.

The statement said: “I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls Rest In Peace.”

Some accounts disclosed that the farmers were said to be labourers from Sokoto State in northwest Nigeria, roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) away, who travelled to the northeast in search of work.

Agency reports said: “There were 60 farmers who were contracted to harvest paddy in the rice fields. Forty-three were slaughtered, with six injured.

“Eight others were missing, presumed to have been kidnapped by the jihadists, he said. The bodies were taken to Zabarmari village, two kilometres away, where they would be kept ahead of burial on Sunday, said a resident, Mala Bunu, who took part in the search and rescue operation.”

Buhari, who described the action as  senseless said the Federal government has given all the needed support to the nation’s Military “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory,” adding that “the entire country is hurt by these senseless killings.”

 

The President’s statement as released by Garba Shehu reads:

PRESIDENT BUHARI CONDEMNS AS INSANE, BOKO HARAM KILLING OF FARMERS IN BORNO STATE.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed grief over the killing of farmers on rice fields at Zabarmari, in Jere Local Government of Borno State, describing the terrorist killings as insane.

“I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls Rest In Peace.”

President Buhari said the government had given all the needed support to the armed forces “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”
