Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Monday was at the presidential villa, Abuja for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.
She was accompanied to the Aso Villa by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zubair Dada.
Okonjo-Iweala is running to become the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and has already emerged as one of the final two candidates for the election.
President Buhari has since expressed his support and that of his administration to her effort to clinch the plump post.
Her visit to the presidential villa is apparently in connection with the election which would be finally determined by October, 27.
The New Diplomat reports that the last phase and final round of selection will effectively determine the fate of Nigeria’s Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee, as they fight head-to-head for the exalted seat of WTO DG.
The 25 year old WTO is set to have its first female leader after Nigeria’s Okonjo-Iweala and South Korea’s Myung-hee made it through Thursday to the final run-off, a WTO spokesman had announced.
According to the Geneva-based organisation, a winner will emerge on October 27 and the decision will be officially announced to the world on November 7.
