A devastating military helicopter crash in Ghana’s Adansi Akrofuom District has claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two prominent ministers, advisors, and military personnel.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has been described as a “Black Wednesday” for Ghana, with the government and citizens grappling with the profound loss.
Chief of Staff to the President of Ghana, Julius Debrah confirmed the development during a press conference on Wednesday.
Among the victims were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana’s Minister for Defence, and Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
Also confirmed deceased are Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister of Agriculture, and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The helicopter crew included Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, alongside Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate.
The New Diplomat reports that the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, was en route to Obuasi when it vanished from radar shortly after takeoff from Accra at approximately 9:00 AM local time.
