Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Omisore who contested in the 2014 gubernatorial election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and also contested for the 2019 gubernatorial election under Social Democratic Party (SDP), has now joined the ruling party after losing respectively to Rauf Argbesola and Gboyega Oyetola, who are both candidates of the APC.
In a release signed by Akintifonbo Kayode, Secretary, APC Ife Federal Constituency, announced that Omisore has joined APC and would be officially registered and admitted to the party on Monday.
Akintifonbo also stated that the official registration of Omisore would take place at his voting unit, St Gabriel Primary School, More, Ile-Ife.
Speculations about Omisore dumping the SDP for the ruling party became rife following a comment he made during a thank-you visit by Governor Oyetola to Ile-Ife, after he was sworn-in as the governor.
During the visit, Omisore had declared his support for the APC.
In his words: “I don’t have to tell anybody that I have joined the party. I’m fully in support of the party in the state for allowing development.”
It would be recalled that Omisore, 63, served as the deputy Governor under the administration of Governor Adebisi Akande, from 1999 to 2003.
Subsequently, he served as a member of the Nigerian Senate for Osun East from 2003 to 2009. He also contested for the governorship seat of Osun State in 2014 and 2019, under the PDP and SDP, respectively, which he lost to APC candidates.
