- Says ‘Protest Has Degenerated Into A Monster’
The Lagos State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state starting from 4 pm Tuesday.
The seizure of movement in Nigeria’s economic nerve centre follows the violence that erupted in parts of the state as hoodlums hijacked the #EndSARS protest, unleashing mayhem on innocent people, including the protesters.
Protesters have been seeking an end to police brutality in the country in the last two weeks, but things took a dramatic turn over the weekend as violence started breaking out with miscreants infiltrating the protest grounds.
Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu said the recent development comes to him as a “shock” in what started as a peaceful protest in the state.
While announcing the curfew imposition, the governor said only essential service providers and first responders will be allowed to move in the state.
Sanwo-Olu said “I have watched with shock how what began as a peaceful #EndSARS protest has degenerated into a monster that is threatening the well-being of our society.
“Lives and limbs have been lost as criminals and miscreants are now hiding under the umbrella of these protests to unleash mayhem on our state.
“As a government that is alive to its responsibility and has shown a commitment to the movement #ENDSARS, we will not watch and allow anarchy in our dear state.
“I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4 pm today, 20th October 2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders, must be found on the streets.”
