Mudashiru Obasa, on Wednesday, legally cemented his position as speaker of the Lagos Assembly as a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja, ruled that his previous impeachment as leader of the legislature was illegal, unconstitutional, null and void.

According to the judgement delivered on Wednesday, the court also annulled the proceedings and resolutions of the House from January 13, 2025, during which Obasa was ousted.

Obasa had filed a suit against the House of Assembly and the newly appointed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, challenging the legality of his removal.

On Monday, 3 March, he was reinstated as Speaker, 49 days after 36 lawmakers removed him from office.

Obasa was nominated by a lawmaker, Noheem Adams, representing Eti-Osa I, after the former Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, resigned from her position.

Recall that Meranda was voted into office following Obasa’s removal on 13 January.

The lawmakers accused Obasa of high-handedness, poor leadership, financial misappropriation, among other allegations.

His removal sparked widespread controversy and upheaval among members of the assembly and the party ranks.

Obasa claimed that his removal as speaker was illegal, as it occurred while he was abroad and the assembly was on recess. However, lawmakers loyal to Ms Meranda insisted that his removal by over two-thirds majority was constitutional.

Obasa, who had filed a suit against his removal as Lagos speaker by some of his lawmakers, refused to withdraw the litigation despite his reinstatement.
