Amid the current turmoil plaguing the Labour Party, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) stormed the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, to demand the dismissal of the National Chairman, Julius Abure.

The union is also protesting the party’s national convention planned for the end of this month on the grounds that Abure is planning to hold a “secret” convention without the input of major stakeholders.

Though the protesters stormed the secretariat holding several placards, the Police refused the protesting workers entry.

The New Diplomat reports this is coming a few hours after the NLC issued a directive to its state councils and political commission, instructing them to engage in a picketing exercise of the Labour Party’s secretariats throughout the country.

The political wing of the NLC, the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission had raised allegations against Abure and the NWC, claiming that they had put forward plans for a national convention in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on March 27. The union claimed that the convention is aimed at re-electing Abure as the sole administrator of the Labour Party, highlighting concerns of secrecy surrounding the event.
