The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), has rescued Major Christopher Daton, who was abducted by some armed bandits during an attack on its academy in Kaduna State.

Daton finally regained his freedom after spending 28 days in captivity.

Recall that some armed bandits on Tuesday, 21st August, 2021, broke into the NDA permanent site, cutting its barbed wire fence and thereafter broke into five apartments at the staff quarters, where they killed the two officers and kidnapped Major Daton.

Reports emerged after that Daton had been murdered by the bandits, a report which has since been dismissed by the authorities of the NDA.

Meanwhile, a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesman of the 1 Division, Nigerian Army Kaduna, Col. Ezindu Idimah, disclosed that the Division, in conjunction with the Air Task Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies launched an operation against the bandits, leading to the rescue of the officer.

The statement also said the operations led to the destruction of several identified bandits’ camps in Afaka- Birnin Gwari areas of Kaduna state, adding that several bandits were killed during the operation.

The statement reads, “The troops arrived at a camp suspected to be the location where Maj CL Datong was being held. At the camp, the troops exchanged fire with the bandits and overwhelmed them with superior fire.

“In the process, the gallant troops were able to rescue the abducted officer. However, the officer sustained a minor injury but has been treated in a medical facility and handed over to NDA for further action.”
