  • His Death, A Colossal Loss, Says Sanwo-olu

The first democratically elected governor of Lagos State, Chief Lateef Jakande, who paved the path for the modernization of Africa’s largest city has died.

Incumbent Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced the passing of the elder statesman and an administrator per excellence on Thursday, February 11, 2020.

Sanwo-olu tweeted:

Jakande died on Thursday morning in Lagos at 91.

“Baba Jakande’s record of service as a journalist of repute and a leader of remarkable achievements as governor of Lagos State will remain indelible for generations to come. His death is a collosal loss and he will be missed.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I want to express my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Baba Jakande. May Allah grant him Aljanat Firdaus, Aamin.” Sanwo-olu added in the message, mourning the colossal loss to the state and Nigeria.

Jakande, one of Nigeria’s foremost journalists was the governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983.

Between 1993 – 1998, he was the Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha’s military regime.
