The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Smart Adeyemi, has emerged winner of the Kogi West senatorial district election.

Adeyemi polled a total of 88,373 votes to beat rival, Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 62,133 votes.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the APC candidate winner of the keenly contested election two weeks after the people of the senatorial district went to the poll.

Penultimate week, INEC could not decide a winner in the election due to violence and electoral malpractices, forcing the Saturday rerun.

The two political foes in Kogi West have been embroiled in bitter contest in recent years. This time, Adeyemi who decamped to APC in 2016 will be replacing Melaye at the Senate following his victory.
