Nigerian students have been further hit with another bad development as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Monday announced its decision to extend its warning strike for another two months.
The recent declaration means Nigerian tertiary students may remain out of school till May 14, 2022.
The Union who made this announcement on its official Twitter account said the decision to further extend its warning strike was made during its National Executive Council (NEC) which held in Abuja on Sunday.
The Union tweeted: “The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has extended its warning strike for another two months (Till May 14th).
“The decision to extend the strike was taken at the union’s National Executive Council, NEC meeting held in Abuja last night.”
Recall that ASUU had initially embarked on a four-week warning strike to press home its demands on renegotiating the ASUU/FG 2009 agreement and the sustainability of the university autonomy by deploying UTAS to replace the government’s “imposed” (IPPIS).
Other demands include the release of the reports of visitation panels to federal universities, distortions in salary payment challenges, funding for revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowance, poor funding of state universities and promotion arrears.
Four weeks after the Union embarked on a nation wide strike, it is yet to find a common ground with the Federal Government.
